I hold my hands up to being a complete geek when it comes to staying in control of our family finances. I started my own budget planner years back and I know that having a simple system has helped us stay out of debt; it’s hard to escape the financial facts when they are staring back at you from a spreadsheet.

If you’re taking your first step towards being more in control of your money then you need to have a budget.

GET INSPIRED: THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A BUDGET PLANNER

A budget planner offers you a simple way of winning at managing your money. Here’s a quick list of some of the benefits of using a budget planner to keep track:

  • All your financial information is organized and in one place
  • Helps you plan your way out of debt
  • Cuts out overspending
  • Identifies unnecessary expenditure
  • You’ll learn to understand your money and your spending habits
  • You are in control of your money rather than the other way around
  • Set yourself some money goals
  • Discover how you can start saving
  • Early warning system for potential problems

In short, if you get to grips with budgeting you will be able to spend less money, save more money, pay off any outstanding debts and put yourself on the road to financial freedom.

If I’m still not convincing you, I’ll just mention that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends creating a budget spreadsheet/worksheet to track your income and expenses. The CFPB has also produced a CFPB Monthly budget tool to help you get your head around creating a realistic budget.

FINDING THE BEST WAY TO KEEP TRACK OF YOUR BUDGET

Once you’ve decided that you are going to keep track of your finances you will need to find a way to manage them. There are several different tools you can use to keep track of your budget:

  • Printable / printed tracker
  • Digital spreadsheet
  • App or website tool

The key is choosing the tool that is easiest for you because if it’s easy it means you are more likely to stick with budgeting.

If you like to have a planner you can print out and write on you’re in the right place!
